Sometimes you wonder if you're sane

Two things happened to me yesterday, and I've realized that middle age is slowly but inexorably approaching. I dyed my hair a brilliant red, and I decided to go on a pig shoot next year in Darwin. Of the two, I'm not sure which is the more horrendous.

My traffic light hair will diminish over time, hopefully. However the Redneck Adventure of a Lifetime will only loom larger as each month passes. It's one of those exploits that you sign up for after drinking too many red wines, which sound thrilling and daring and make you feel invincible at the time, but in the cold light of the next day can't be seen as anything other than grossly stupid.

I'll be up there with my husband and a bunch of other Blokes, chasing wild pigs through swamps, avoiding menacing buffalo with huge horns and tempers to match, and fishing from the lagoon while trying not to catch a crocodile. You take your rifle when you go to the toilet. That kind of place. It's a guided hunt, and it costs a bit, but top value.

This doesn't, upon reflection, really sound like me. But it's a week of driving through South Australia, past the opal mines of Coober Pedy and on through Alice Springs and the Rock, and so to the Top End, where the scenery is glorious and the silence is deafening, and you have the entire world to yourself, or so it seems. During the day it's hot enough to bake eggs on the stones. At night it gets frosty, and the Milky Way comes down to the horizon, so bright and close you could touch it. I'll take my 8-inch telescope along for the ride if it will fit. We'll camp out along the way, take photos of spiky vegetation, hot red earth and weird-looking reptiles, and if charging through the swamps after angry pigs doesn't in the end do it for me, I can always fish. The barramundi are to die for up there.

I'll be with experienced and professional hunters, and I'll surely learn a lot from them about hunting, shooting, even skinning and quartering your beast when you've shot it. A skill every woman needs, no doubt. Living off the land, going back to the primal in each of us. I wonder if the reality will match the imagery in my head. I wonder if I've bitten off more than I can chew.

Eight months away. A lot can happen in eight months. But if I don't do it now, I never will.

Does it sound crazy?

UPDATE: Husband says he'll buy me a 308 LTR. Aren't husbands just awesome?

Of course I'm in for some serious payback, but it'll be worth it.

And now there will be no going back.

I'm afraid I'm not technically minded enough to make any substantial recommendations, but I do recall that my mother went pig shooting in her youth with a 22. Her only encounter resulted in her scoring a hit but subsequently being chased by her target up a tree. Based on that, I think I'd go for the 308 as well...

Interesting dilemma on what to take. We have a Sako .308 so that will go. The other rifle will have to be a re-barrel of something else, due to restraints on budget and gunsafe capacity . . .

At present have a 6x47 and a 22/250 which are in the re-barrel mix (both Remingtons.) One of them will become a .243 eventually. I think the 6x47 will probably be the first to be reconfigured as it is being a bit tricksy - this calibre is prone to it, and eventually you get sick of the load development exercise and decide to change it to something useful. What calibre exactly we haven't decided yet. Probably .308, maybe something similar.

Any suggestions?
